Each year there are about 6,000 accidents in the city; nearly 400 typically are related to drivers running red lights.
The Kansas Department of Transportation set up a pilot program to test the effectiveness of different red light running technologies.
During the pilot program, Overland Park installed two red light running cameras: one at 119th Street and Hawthorne Plaza and another at 95th Street and Quivira Road.
These red light running systems were used to collect data only; no citations or warnings were sent to violators. Basic violation data that was collected included date, time, number of seconds the light was red, speed and license plate numbers.
