As part of the city’s pavement maintenance program, the city will begin applying a surface treatment called "microsurfacing" to designated streets this spring.
Microsurfacing 2008
The 2008 microsurfacing and cape seal program will begin in early May and be complete in late September (microsurfacing can not be installed when ambient air temps drop below 55 degrees Fahrenheit).

There will be two contractors completing the work - Ballou Construction (streets north of I-435) and Musselman & Hall Construction (south of I-435).

The surface treatment to be placed on streets is called microsurfacing. Microsurface provides a membrane to prevent water from seeping into the pavement and protects the pavement from exposure to the sun, which can rapidly deteriorate the asphalt. In many cases, the sealants will eliminate the need to do expensive pavement patching and will add years to the life of the existing pavement.
The microsurfacing process will require the contactor to close some streets completely while others will be closed one lane at a time. Closures will last approximately four to six hours until the microsurface has sufficiently cured enough to allow traffic.
Why is resurfacing necessary?
Street sealing is an important part of the city’s preventative maintenance program. Our program allows streets to achieve a much greater life expectancy, and better user satisfaction at less cost than a comparable street without preventative maintenance. It is understandable that some residents may perceive the work as an inconvenience, but please keep in mind that the work is typically completed within a day. City staff members will work to keep inconveniences to a minimum.
Will my street be resurfaced and when?
Prior to beginning, street maintenance crews will be preparing the streets by sealing cracks and replacing deteriorated pavement.
In order to keep residents informed, the maps will be updated as crews complete the microsurfacing project and move to other streets.
Will I get an advanced notice of the work schedule?
Yes, residents will receive three advanced notifications prior to the work being started:
| Letter: | All affected residents received a letter informing them that their street will be treated. |  |
| Postcard: | Approximately two weeks prior to beginning the microsurfacing process residents will receive an orange postcard with an estimated timeframe. | |
| Door Hanger: | Door hangers will be issued 48 hours in advance as a final reminder. (The door hanger will include a map of other closures in the neighborhood so residents know where they may safely park during construction.) |

To help us perform a better job and protect you, your family and property, please follow the guidelines below:
- Keep children and pets away from the street during construction until reopened. Several large pieces of equipment are involved.
- Do not attempt to drive on newly sealed streets until they have been opened to traffic. Fresh microsurface may easily be tracked onto driveways and thrown onto your vehicles finish (see photo). In both cases it may permanently stain.
- Plan activities accordingly.
