Overland Park's Canine Unit has four officers and four dogs, two German Shepherds, one Belgian malanois and one golden retriever.
Three of the dogs are trained in narcotic detection and patrol work. The other is trained in explosives detection and patrol work.
Initial training lasts approximately eight to 12 weeks and they continue to
train daily.
The canine handlers are each assigned to a patrol team. Their primary function is as a patrol officer with the additional abilities of the canine. The handlers are expected to work this assignment for the working life of the police dog, approximately five to seven years.
The canines and handlers are required to be certified by a Police Dog Association each year.
The dogs live at home with their handlers' families.
