Chief of Police, 1954-1995
In 1954, Myron Scafe began his police career by joining
the Mission Township Police Department, a five-officer precursor to what was
to become the modern day Overland Park Police Department. Chief Scafe served
in a variety of capacities within the Department, becoming the Chief of Police
in 1973.
During his tenure as Chief, the Department became known for being progressive, innovative, and state-of-the-art. During his years as Chief, the Traffic Safety Unit, the Special Investigations Section, the Crime Prevention Unit, and the DARE and School Resource Units were established.
In the late 1970s, Chief Scafe formed a cooperative task force with the federal government to produce two very successful Sting Operations for the recovery of stolen property, earning him the nickname of "The King of Sting" in the local media.
Chief Scafe leaves a legacy of innovation in the Department, striving to always be the best. He assembled a staff of creative, innovative, and talented individuals, who together created a reputation of excellence in the law enforcement community.
