OPFD Explorer Post 2976 was first chartered on Dec. 1, 1985, by a handful of firefighters that identified a need to recruit and develop young adults into the fire service career.
Since its inception, more than 150 young adults have participated in the program.
The focus is not only to provide exposure to the many facets of firefighting but also to help young people mature and to prepare themselves to become responsible, professional adults.
Many of our Explorers have moved on to become firefighters in career and volunteer departments throughout the metro area, including our own.
Others have become doctors, lawyers, computer programmers, but more importantly, leaders in their fields.
Volunteers and leaders in our community created the Overland Park Fire Department, and the OPFD and the City of Overland Park are proud to honor that tradition today.
