Tricks and tips for biking to work, school
People ride bicycles for all sorts of reasons from better health to saving money on fuel. Additionally, bicycling helps the environment, allows you to escape from the traffic congestion, and is a lot of fun!
There are a lot of details to think about when commuting for the first time. Consider this list to help you get started and ensure your first rides go smoothly:
Clothes
- Bring supplies (clothes, shoes, towel) on days you have to drive or when it rains
- Give yourself about 25 minutes to get ready for work.

Traffic
- Always ride with the flow of traffic
- Stop and look before entering any roadway
- Use hand signals and obey traffic laws (stop at stop signs and traffic lights)
Your Route
- Drive your route before your ride, checking for ease of route and traffic congestion
Safety
- Secure all items (racks, bags) on bike before beginning
- Complete a quick, two minute safety check every time, including tightening your wheel skewers and checking your brakes and tire/tube air pressure
- Wear sunglasses and your helmet
- Bring front and rear lights when riding at dusk or dark
Parking and Locking
- Park your bike inside when possible (especially if it may rain)
- Lock your front wheel and frame to bike rack
