In the Junior High program we watch a house burn, talk about safety and then each student gets to put out a real fire.
The program opens with an exercise which encourages the kids to imagine a fire in their house and how long it would take to hear the smoke alarm, get out of the house, call 9-1-1, etc. A video of a house on fire is shown and the kids can compare their times with those of the the video house. This is a good foundation for a discussion about fire safety.
The program ends with tips for cooking safely, and some students are allowed to put out a fire in a frying pan with only the lid. The whole program is about 50 minutes.
