Juvenile Firesetter Program

This program was designed as a tool to help parents address the problem of fire misuse by a child in their home.

During the one hour sessions, the advisor will use videos, activities and discussion to teach respect and proper handling of fire and fire tools. The main message is that use of fire and fire tools is for adults only. However, many of the questions and curiosities that children have about fire are discussed.

At the end of each session a homework assignment is made. In the assignment the parent is asked to read a few pages from the parent handbook and complete two to three simple activities with the child. The age and circumstances of each child are taken into consideration when designing their program, but most children and their parents will be able to complete the program in three sessions.

Education alone does not work for all children. Our advisors, while experienced and trained educators, are not counselors. They are not qualified to evaluate a child's psychological state and may ask that you seek additional help from a counselor. However, even if a professional counselor is needed, we can work with that counselor to provide an appropriate educational program for your child which will support the work of the counselor.

Occasionally, circumstances may indicate that an alternative form of help is necessary and that the firesetter education program will not be effective, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

There is no cost for the firesetter education program, your only investment is time. If counseling is required, it will be at your expense and with a counselor of your choosing.

Our goal is to use education in a positive way to help your child understand the danger of his or her behavior and make better choices regarding fire and fire tools.
