The Visual Preference Survey (VPS) and the Demographic, Market and Policy Questionnaire were administered during a series of community workshops designed to generate the ideas and the policies that will define the future of Metcalf Avenue.
The VPS technique determines the future visual and spatial qualities that are appropriate for the Metcalf corridor.
Participants in the various community workshops in May were asked to evaluate a series of images based on their suitability for the future of Metcalf.
Images were presented in a variety of categories, including streets, parking, retail, mixed-use, pedestrian realm, signs, offices, housing, parks/plazas and other open spaces, and mobility.
As each image was shown, participants were asked “How appropriate or inappropriate is the image you are seeing now and in the future for the Metcalf corridor?” Using this criteria, attendees rated each image using a scale that ranged from negative 10 to positive 10.
The Demographic, Market and Policy Questionnaire provides information on who participated in the survey as well as market and planning policy data that will be used to prepare recommendations for community plans.
Understanding the Results
Images from the VPS are arranged by category and ordered from most positive response to most negative. The first number on each image represents the average score that the image received while the number in parentheses is the standard deviation of the response.
Standard deviation represents the range of variation from an average of a group of measurements. For example, an image that receives a score of positive 4 with a standard deviation of 3 suggests an image that received an overall positive response with a majority of scores falling between positive 1 and positive 7.
Images receiving positive scores can be useful in determining the preferred building and spatial characteristics that people want and will support.
Conversely, images receiving negative scores not only help identify the qualities and characteristics that are not appropriate but also identify areas that represent the greatest opportunities for positive change.
Responses to the Demographic, Market and Policy Questionnaire are presented next to the relevant question. Percentages represent the proportion of participants who selected a particular answer.
