The Senior Assistant City Attorney assigned to the Community Development goal area serves as legal advisor to the following areas of the City:
- Community Development Committee of the Council
- Planning Commission
- Board of Zoning Appeals
- Code Board of Appeals
- Interior Property Maintenance Task Force
- Infill and Redevelopment Guidelines Task Force
- Planning and Development Services Department
- Parks and Recreation Department
He does legal research for these groups, answers and gives opinions on their legal questions; attends their meetings and workshops; drafts or reviews contracts, ordinances, resolutions, administrative policies and state legislation proposed by them.
If necessary, he represents the City before the Senate, House and Interim Committees of the Kansas Legislature.
He attends those portions of the Council meetings at which recommendations of the Planning Commission are before the Council.
He also defends, or aids in the defense against lawsuits brought challenging zoning and other land use actions of the City.
In conjunction with the Police Legal Adviser he oversees the prosecution of code cases in the municipal court and trains code enforcement officers and prosecutors in the prosecution of code cases.
He advises the Communications Division of the Office of the City Manager on legal matters relating to the City's Web site.
Finally, he discharges other duties as may be assigned by the City Attorney.
