OP celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting, poster contest
In celebration of Arbor Day, students and staff gathered on the grounds of City Hall, 8500 Santa Fe Drive, to plant a flowering dogwood tree.
In addition to the planting, Mayor Carl Gerlach awarded certificates and prizes to the first-place finishers in Overland Park's Arbor Day Poster Competition: "Trees are Terrific - Inside and Out!"
There were seven winners in the poster contest, including:
- Andrew Gan, first-grader at Cottonwood Point Elementary School
- Ashley Jacobson, second-grader, home schooled
- Anthony-Lorenzo Wuest, third-grader, home schooled
- Courtney Jacobson, fourth-grader, home schooled
- Hanna Siefken, fifth-grader, Diemer Elementary School, second-place
- Brandon Strecker, fifth-grader, Heartland Elementary School. Brandon's first-place finish makes him eligible for state-wide judging, sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
- Brian Jacobson, sixth-grader, home schooled
