A permit is required prior to installation when a tent or air supported structure is over 900 square feet in area.
Applications are available at the Fire Department Administrative Office, 9550 W. 95th Street, or can be downloaded from this Web site (.pdf file).
There is no fee for the permit.
Information submitted with the permit application shall include:
- Site plan showing the location of the tent and all buildings on the site.
- The location of all exits, seating capacity and layout; all mechanical and electrical equipment.
- The flame spread affidavit of the tent material.
- The use of the tent (ie. furniture sale, picnic, etc.).
- A copy of the Special Event Permit approved by the Planning and Development Services Department.
- The time and date that the tent will be up and ready for inspection.
Additional permits may be required by other City Departments such as Codes Administration, Health, Planning and Development, or Police. Contact those respective departments for information.

Within 24 hours of receiving the permitting paperwork an Inspector from OPFD will call you to confirm the time and date of the inspection.
For scheduling purposes we must receive permitting paperwork at least 24 hours prior to the anticipated inspection time/date.
Tent Inspection:
The tent will be inspected for compliance with Chapter 24 of the 2006 International Fire Code, including the following items:
- Gasoline,
gas, charcoal, candles or other cooking devices or any other unapproved
open flame shall not be permitted inside or located within 20 feet of the
tent.
- At
least one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 4-A rating, or two
portable fire extinguishers with a minimum 2-A rating each, shall be
provided in each tent.
- All tents shall be constructed of flame-resistant
materials. An affidavit shall be submitted certifying that the flame-resistant
process and materials used comply with Section 2406 of the 2003 International
Fire Code and stating the date of treatment and the warranted period of
effectiveness of the process. The flame-resistant process shall be in conformance with NFPA 701.
- Electrical wiring shall be in conformance
with Article 305 of NFPA 70, 1996 Edition.
- The tent shall be separated
from adjacent structures according to the following table:
- Please be prepared to let the Fire Department know what time your tent (including all of the tent contents) will be set up and ready for inspection.

The inspector will leave the tent permit with you after they have completed a satisfactory on-site inspection.
