Temporary Sign Regulations

Garage sale signThe city regulates temporary signs for many reasons. The design or location of temporary signs can often be distracting to drivers or block sight lines at intersections, thus reducing traffic safety. The haphazard or careless placement of temporary signs can cause significant damage to lawns, underground sprinkler systems, and utility lines. The placing of signs by nailing or screwing them onto wooden utility poles can shorten the useful life of the pole and increase maintenance costs. Finally, temporary signs can undermine the attractive visual character that is part of Overland Park’s reputation.

In situations where they are permitted, temporary signs can be placed only after permission has been granted by the owner or resident of the adjacent property. Property owners are responsible for illegal temporary signs on their property and the street right-of-way adjacent to their property. Owners are allowed and encouraged to remove illegal signs, including those placed without their permission. In general, temporary signs are not allowed in the public right-of-way (typically the area within 10 to 12 feet of the street curb, including any public sidewalk). The only exception to this rule is for political signs.
