Checking the Status of a Building Permit or Inspection

While visiting the Online Development Center, click "Permit/Plan Review Info." From this page you can search for a building permit. Building permits always have the prefix "BLD". If you enter a full case number, the system will return just that case, but if you enter partial information (e.g., BLD2004-001) you will get a list of all possible matches (e.g., cases BLD2004-00100 through BLD2004-00199).

For a building permit search, the address field is handy. Enter the street number and street name. Partial information is acceptable, so if you are looking for a permit on 124th Street, you can just enter "124" for the street name. However, "124" will also match cases on 124th Ter or 124th Cir. If you are interested in several permits on the same block, enter partial information into the street number. For example, entering "141" and "Slater" returns all permits in the 141-hundred block of Slater St.

More Info:

You can also combine criteria to narrow the results. For example, if you search by address, you will get a list of all applications that match the address. If you include "BLD" in the case number field along with the address information, you will get only building permit cases that match the address.

Once you have a list of cases, click on the case number that you are interested in.

The next screen will show detailed information about the case selected. At top you will see the case number and current status of the case. When a building permit application is first taken, the status is "Received". Once the permit has been issued, the status changes to "Issued", and when a Certificate of Occupancy has been issued the status will be "Final". The top of this page also shows the official address for this location, the type of work allowed under the permit (e.g., "Single Family", "Room Addition", "Deck", etc.), a brief description, and the date the application was received.

There is a quick glance section that gives additional permit information

Pending Activites are next, with actions listed in chronological order based on the date they are due. - so these activities are not complete.

At the bottom of the screen you'll find a series of boxes labeled Activities, Conditions, People, Related Case, Parcel Tags

By Clicking the Activites Box you'll see all the actions listed in chronological order based on the date they were completed. If you'd like to sort in another order, click on the column heading and the data will be refreshed. Common activities include the following:

Permit Issued – Full: When this activity has a status of Done, a building permit for the full project was issued on the date shown. Partial permits are occasionally issued where we do not have enough information to allow all construction activities, but some work (such as excavation or foundations).

Inspections: Inspection activities are named by the type of inspection followed by a number in parentheses (e.g., "Ground Rough(1)"). The number indicates how many inspections of this type have been done on this permit. If the status is Pending, the inspection isn't complete or the inspection results have not yet been entered into the computer (inspection results are typically entered at the end of the day on which the inspection was done). If the work inspected was satisfactory, the status will be Pass. If the work was not satisfactory, the status will be Fail and there will may be notes that explain why the inspection failed. Other possible status entries are Cancelled (the contractor asked to cancel the inspection), Not Ready (the work was not ready for inspection when the inspector arrived on site), or Partial (the work inspected was satisfactory, but there is more work of the same type that could not be inspected at that time).

Available for Final CO: Once a satisfactory Final inspection has been completed, the building inspector will add this activity to the case indicating that the builder can apply for a final Certificate of Occupancy. If the building can be occupied but there are still items that need to be completed, you may see an activity titled "Available for Temporary CO".

Certificate of Occupancy: When this activity has a status of Done, a final Certificate of Occupancy was issued on the date shown. This is typically the final step in a building permit. For a permit that does not result in space that can actually be occupied (such as a deck permit or fence permit), the corresponding activity is "Certificate of Compliance."
