Preparing for Bombs and Explosives

Typically an organization is alerted to the threat of a bomb or explosive either by discovery of a suspicious package or by telephone on the publicly listed telephone number.

Suspicious Package: If a suspicious package is discovered immediately secure the area so it cannot be inadvertently detonated. Begin evacuation of the building in a calm and orderly manner taking care to avoid the secured area. Call 9-1-1 and be prepared to describe the package, its location and approximately how long it has been there if possible. Include information as to the color and shape of the package, any sounds coming from the package, the absence or presence of wires, leaking substances or writing. If it was delivered to your facility try to provide information on the carrier. Do not allow anyone to touch or disturb the package.

Telephoned Bomb Threat: The person who calls in a bomb threat will usually be brief so that the call cannot be traced. It is important that the person receiving the call gather as much information as possible from the caller. See the checklist below for an example of the information that should be noted. Persons in your organization responsible for answering the telephone should have a similar checklist readily available. If the caller indicates where the bomb might be located, that area should be secured. The building should be evacuated and 9-1-1 should be called as described above.
