FEMA Floodplain Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released new flood insurance rate maps August 3, 2009.

For Overland Park, the maps changed the floodplain boundaries along Indian, Brush, Turkey, Negro, Coffee and Wolf creeks; Camp Branch; Blue River; and their tributaries.  The FEMA maps show the limits of the Special Flood Hazard Area, the area next to creeks and major storm drains that has at least a 1 percent chance of flooding each year. The special flood hazard area is often called the "100-year floodplain."

The city has obtained special "Letters of Map Changes" to verify the status of many homes that are outside but close to the Special Flood Hazard Area.

Online Maps

FEMA maps:

  • Find the correct FEMA map panel number on the index page. All OP maps start with "20091C" followed by a unique map panel number (for example "0035G").
  • Go to the Product Catalog for Floodplain Maps in Overland Park to see a list of Overland Park's maps. Pick the right map from the list and press the VIEW icon (If you need a map for a different city, start with the General Product Catalog to find the right listings).
  • Zoom and pan around the full map to find your particular streets.
  • Press the "Make a FIRMette" button on the left hand column. Move the orange box over the area you want to see better, then click the icon for "PDF" or "Image" file on the left hand side. This will create the FIRMette for you.
  • Save or print the "FIRMette," which count as an "official" excerpt of the larger FEMA map.

Overland Park Floodplain Maps

Areas in DARK BLUE are in the Special Flood Hazard Area. The Special Flood Hazard Area are those areas of land subject to the 1 percent annual storm (100-year flood). Buildings and homes in this area may be required by their mortgage lender to have flood insurance.  Cross-hatched areas are in the floodway, which is the portion of the floodplain where water is typically deepest and fastest.

Areas in LIGHT BLUE (Shaded Zone X) are not part of the Special Flood Hazard Area and are not required to have flood insurance.
