Special Pay Calculations
Many employees think of their pay as the amount shown on their pay stubs,
or as the annual gross amount that shows up on their W-2 forms used to
report income to the Internal Revenue Service. Occasionally, employees
need to know how pay is calculated for special circumstances, such as for
overtime pay. Let's take a look at the methods of determining pay
rates for various special pay calculations. To illustrate these special
pay calculations, let's take a look at a representative employee,
J. Smith, a full-time employee with a monthly salary of $2,819.
| Pay Description | Calculation Method | J. Smith's actual rates of pay |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Rate | Monthly Rate X 12 | $2,819 (current monthly salary) X 12 = $33,828 |
| Biweekly Rate | Annual Rate / 26* | $33,828 (annual rate) / 26 = $1,301.08 |
| Hourly Rate | Annual Rate / 2,080** | $33,828 (annual rate) / 2,080 = $16.26346 |
| Overtime Rate | Hourly Rate X 1.5*** | $16.26346 (hourly rate) X 1.5 = $24.39519 |
**There are 2,080 work hours per year, based on a 40-hour week.
***Overtime is paid at one-and one-half times the regular hourly rate.
