Short-term disability benefits go into effect when an employee is unable to work due to an illness or injury.
Off-the-job illness or injury: Once an employee reaches regular status, he/she will receive 60 percent of his/her base salary beginning with the 91st day of disability. Employees continue to receive this benefit through the 180th day of disability.
On-the-job illness or injury: During the first 180 calendar days, employees receive 100 percent of their salary, offset by any Workers' Compensation benefits received. Beginning on the 181st day of disability, an employee may receive eligible benefits provided by Workers' Compensation, KPERS, or Social Security.
Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance
This program is offered to employees to provide coverage until the employee
becomes covered by one of the city's disability plans (i.e., Police Pension
Plan, KPERS, or city's Salary Continuance Plan). During the first 90 days
off due to disability, the employee will receive 60% of his/her base monthly
salary, should he/she become sick or injured (including maternity leave) and
not able to work. Waiting periods are applicable before benefit payments begin.
Benefits begin for new hires (excluding police officers) after a 30-day waiting
period and are payable for up to one year. Employees must exhaust all accrued
sick leave before being eligible for benefit payments under each plan.
Long-term disability benefits are provided by Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) after one year of service. If approved, an employee will receive 60 percent of his/her monthly base salary beginning with the 181st day of disability. This benefit continues until age 65 or retirement.
