Noise Ordinance

The city's noise ordinance was implemented in 2001 after communication and feedback from residents and the community.

For residential property, the noise level may not exceed 60 decibels between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and 55 decibels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Sixty decibels is about the noise level of a dishwasher, conversation or ringing telephone (exceptions to this ordinance include the use of power tools and/or lawn mowers between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.)

One application that the new ordinance targets is use of a stereo.
A stereo that can be heard across a property line between midnight and 6 a.m. is in violation of the new ordinance.

Vehicles are also a common complaint of noise disturbance. Under the amended ordinance, there is to be no testing of any type of motor vehicle that can be heard by neighbors between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. That includes revving an engine.

Everyone has either heard or been in a car that is shaking the ground with its bass. If the noise can be heard (or in some cases felt) 50 feet from the origin of the sound, then it is considered a violation.

The first violation may result in a fine of no less than $50, the second $150, and the third $250.
